Event Description

The School of Optometry & Vision Science, University of Waterloo is pleased to present our annual continuing education program on September 22, 23 and 24, 2017, in conjunction with the School’s 50th anniversary celebration.  The 2017, 50th anniversary, CE weekend will offer a program of contemporary optometric continuing education.  Topics include glaucoma, diagnostic imaging, low vision, myopia management, and dry eye disease.  Information will be practical and contemporary and will be valuable to clinicians in all areas of optometric practice, from new graduates to those with a long-standing career in optometry.

Clair Bobier Lecture
The 28th annual Clair Bobier Lecture in Vision Science will be presented to honour Dr. Bobier's immense contributions to the Optometric Profession.  This years recipient is Dr. John Dowling, the Gordon and Llura Gund Research Professor of Neurosciences, Harvard University, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology.  He will presenting "Reconstructing the human fovea".

Alumni Skit Night
Do you remember Skit Night?  Relive it by joining us for our first Alumni Skit night competition!  Simply enjoy the entertainment or perform and compete to be the 50th Anniversary Skit Night Champions! Teams can be your classmates, colleagues from your practice or from your town/city or a group of friends from the program. Teams are invited to prepare a skit up to 15 minutes in length to present at the event.

Optometric Assisants Program
The School is pleased to once again welcome Optometric Assistants & Staff to attend their own 1 1/2 day program including a full day of informative lectures and workshops that will help new and experiences OA's and staff to hone their spectacle skills.  All hours for Optometric Assistants Continuing Education are subject to approval for accreditation through the CAO.

Emerson Woodruff Lecture
The 23rd annual Emerson Woodruff Lecture will be presented to honour Dr. Woodruff's significant contributions to the School of Optometry & Vision Science.  This years recipient is Dr. Susan Vitale, a Research Epidemiologist, Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications. National Eye Institute (NEI) - National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD. She will be presenting “The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES): A valuable resource for vision research”.

To wrap up our 50th Anniversary weekend, we will host a BBQ and Road Hockey Tournament for all to enjoy.  Teams will be a mixture of alumni, students, faculty and staff to ensure that there is an even blend of experience.
