The Event Horizon Telescope has now moved past the first image towards resolving many key questions about black holes and their impact on our universe. From how they feast on surrounding gas to the origin of the lightspeed *emanations*, jets, that enable black holes to rule the fates of galaxies, the EHT has begun to replace science fiction with science fact. I'll describe the latest EHT results, their astronomical context, how they are shedding light on gravity's most extreme manifestations, and present a vision of what will come after EHT. A gala evening to celebrate Dominic Barton and his profound contributions as Chancellor of the University of Waterloo In conjunction with Women Chiropractors we are looking forward to connecting chiropractors locally, providing an educational experience and a chance to network. The day will be broken down into sessions focusing on the anatomy lab, the medicine wheel and learning from other professionals in accompanying fields. A certificate of completion and an accompanying letter are provided for those to submit for continuing education credits. Join us on Wednesday, May 1 to celebrate and connect with your UWaterloo community in Ottawa. This program is for the folks trying to figure out what they want from their career, and folks trying to find a job that will compliment them. This is event will bring together UWaterloo Engineering alumni working at Microsoft in Seattle area to network with each other, hear updates from campus and learn about how they can get more involved with their alma mater. Are you curious about how to navigate a career transition between different roles or industries? The Recent Engineering Alumni Council invites you to a round table discussion with UWaterloo Engineering Alumni Kimberley Kadour (BASc ‘00) and Megan Walker (BASc ‘13). Kimberley and Megan will share their experience with navigating career transitions and leveraging expertise across industries. Register to attend this virtual discussion and interactive Q&A session! We invite Waterloo Architecture Alumni of the greater Vancouver area to come together to connect over a casual night of refreshments. Alumni will hear some important updates from the School, as well as have the opportunity to mix and mingle with other Waterloo Architecture graduates. Modern astronomy seeks to understand how galaxies seen in the local Universe formed in the thirteen billion years since the Big Bang. Computer simulations can successfully reproduce the structure of the Universe on large scales but typically fail when we zoom in on individual galaxies. In particular, the largest galaxies are predicted to be awash with cold gas and young stars, when in reality they are gas-poor and dormant. Additional physics is needed. Known as feedback, the high-energy processes around supermassive black holes are thought to drive gas out of galaxies and shut down star formation. These black holes lie at the centre of every galaxy, including our Milky Way, but we do not yet understand how they can limit the growth of an entire galaxy. I will review our understanding of feedback, our recent discoveries with current telescopes and the exciting potential of the newly launched XRISM observatory. Amidst the discussion, take the esteemed opportunity to extend your greetings and pay tribute to Brian McNamara, a distinguished figure in the field. Your presence is eagerly anticipated for this momentous occasion. We can't wait to welcome you back to campus for a very special celebration! Reunite, reminisce and celebrate with your classmates, friends and family at Reunion 2024. You're invited to join reunion events, anniversary celebrations, learning opportunities and more. We invite Waterloo Architecture Alumni to come together to connect with fellow alumni, as well as faculty members, students, and staff of the School. Maya Przybylski, O’Donovan Director, School of Architecture, University of Waterloo, will be saying a few words regarding the 2024 year, including exciting updates from the School, upcoming alumni events, and more! Refreshments will be served. We invite Waterloo Architecture Alumni of the NYC area to come together to connect over a casual night of refreshments. Alumni will hear some important updates from the School from O'Donovan Director, Maya Przybylski, as well as have the opportunity to mix and mingle with other Waterloo Architecture graduates.
